How to spray paint interior plastic chrome parts
This method and paint combinations will give you a chrome look, that is pretty respectable.
For the procedures below, wear latex gloves in case you inadvertantly touch any painted area..
1. Prep the piece by removing all remaining chrome.
Start lightly sanding with 120 grit on old chrome. Take care to not put too much pressure to sand the plastic below. Get it close and finish with a 200 and 400.
If you dont get all (or your best try) of the original chrome off, when you paint. the paint will react by bleeding off any remaining chrome.
2. Wash your part with soap and water. Clean and dry well.
Hold your part to be chrome painted to a light, and view for any original chrome still present..
Redo Step 1 if any original chrome still remains.
3. Using Rustolium Gloss Black spary can paint,. It is critical that you do not spray any area too heavy, go slow and steady.
Lightly mist your part slowly building up the layers till all smooth and shiny.
The black is used a a base coat for the chrome paint to reflect off, giving it the chrome look.
Without the black base your chrome paint will be shiny gray.
4. Let dry just till it starts to loose a bit of the wet shine. aproximately 10 minutes. Do not dry too long as the paint will loose a bit of gloss as it dries more.
5. Using Dupli-color CHROME spray can paint. It is even more critical that you do not spray any area too heavy,
Apply very light mists, slowly building up the layers.. These extremly fine mists applied, will dry quickly allowing the next mist to trap the shine of the chrome paint below it.
If you overspray, the chrome paint will
turn out grey, as the thickness will eliminate the shine due to desity of paint applied at one time.
Continue misting till entire piece is smooth and shiny chrome look.
Less is more. As soon as it is shiny do not apply any more chrome paint.
More paint after this will just risk dulling the shine and make it look more grey then chrome.
6. Allow to dry for at least 3 days.
Do not touch the paint with your finger during drying. Your finger prints may easily be engraved/transfered in to the paint.
I have been happy with the results and have not yet tried to clear coat the part after the chrome paint.
Some have said it dulls the shine of the chrome.
